promises of home

by Aqeela Naqvi

the heaviness of a warm summer night.

eyes, heavy with tears. mouths, heavy with farewells. lead-laced movements of feet heavy, the inability to turn away.

a heart searching for years and years to finally come upon home! a long awaited exhale cut short, an exultation silenced, finding it cannot stay.

this night.
the final remnants of the warmth of a mother’s embrace;
the hungry memorization of a view forever.

(Qom –
many promises have I left inside your hands.
for now, our paths must part,
but God-willing, we shall meet again one day.)
