what came before us

english poetry in remembrance of the ahlulbayt is still young, and i am both proud of and inspired by the unique direction that it is being taken by a new, vastly creative, vastly talented generation.

but in mapping out this new path, we who choose to write and recite in english should be careful not to do ourselves a disservice by discounting the importance of studying and learning from the rich literary heritage that has been passed down through the generations – the voices of our ancestors whispering to us through the veils of time.

as a generation, we are young. and we still have so much, so incredibly much, to learn from centuries of elders, the poetic giants of so many mother tongues Рtheir mastery in articulating such grief, such passion, such tragedy.. such sheer and incredible beauty.
