what came before us

english poetry in remembrance of the ahlulbayt is still young, and i am both proud of and inspired by the unique direction that it is being taken by a new, vastly creative, vastly talented generation.
but in mapping out this new path, we who choose to write and recite in english should be careful not to do ourselves a disservice by discounting the importance of studying and learning from the rich literary heritage that has been passed down through the generations – the voices of our ancestors whispering to us through the veils of time.
as a generation, we are young. and we still have so much, so incredibly much, to learn from centuries of elders, the poetic giants of so many mother tongues – their mastery in articulating such grief, such passion, such tragedy.. such sheer and incredible beauty.
